TEACHING NOTES 5
What
Is Sustainable Development?
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Within the scope of the proposed measures, “sustainable
development” means development that meets the needs of
the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development
is based on a long-term approach which takes into account
the inextricable nature of the environmental, social and
economic dimensions of development activities.
From the Sustainable Development Act passed by Quebec in 2006,
Chapter 1, Preliminary Provisions
A more literal translation of the English term sustainable
development, used in the Brundtland Report published in
1987. Some people prefer to speak of sustainable development,
i.e. what our environment can support over the long term,
instead of sustainable development.
