7. Extension activity: Trees and the environment

Objective
Analyze how a landscape can be transformed through tree planting and the positive consequences this can have (photosynthesis, preventing erosion, etc.). Identify concrete actions that can be performed by each individual in their daily lives.

Instructions
7.1 Writing exercise
In three paragraphs, explain how the man who planted trees made a difference to his region of France. Describe the transformation of the landscape, before and after the trees were planted. Explain the role of trees in the ecosystem (evaluation chart in Annex 7 — adapt level of difficulty to your students).

This writing exercise will serve as an evaluation whose criteria are listed below.
Students must be able to make the connection:
1.   Between the presence of trees and protection of the environment, by explaining the role of photosynthesis or erosion.
2.   Between the concrete actions each individual can perform and their positive impact on the environment.

7.2 Oral presentation

Following the writing exercise, students will take turns giving oral presentations on the roles and importance of trees in protecting the environment. The presentations will serve as the activity review and evaluation (5 minutes per student).
