Le Nez de Cléopâtre

1953 In 1953, caricaturist Robert Lapalme who did rebus puzzles for the game show Le nez de Cléopâtre left the weekly program. I was extremely shy, but Ghylaine pushed me to apply for the job, which was very well paid. There was one other illustrator in the running, and after a range of tests I was chosen to do drawings live on air. Christian was three, and it fascinated him to see his father on TV. At one point he told Ghylaine, “He smiled at me!” It was quite the challenge to find new ways to fool the participants every week, giving them hints that would put them on the wrong track before finally revealing the right answer. I was also invited to work on another weekly show, L’heure du concert/The Concert Hour, produced by Pierre Mercure and Noël Gauvin. I had to create all kinds of visual effects and illustrations to quickly put the ballets and operas into context since the program only presented excerpts from them.
