Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, 145 km northwest of Los Angeles, was founded by the Spanish in 1786. For a long time, it remained a secluded hamlet inhabited by a handful of families. The Mexican government ceded the city to theUnited States in February 1848; however, development was slow until the turn of the 20th century. After the massive earthquake of 1925, strict rules were adopted to regulate building construction and meet the era’s rapid growth. As a result, the city’s architecture is somewhat unvarying.
