Schlitteurs and woodcutters

A schlitte is a traditional wooden sledge designed to transport wood from the high alpine forests down into the valleys. The schlitteur (sledge driver) took the front position to keep the team on the path. La schlitte tue l'homme en montant and l'achève en descendant (“The sledge kills a man going up, and finishes him off on the way down”) is popular Vosges-region saying that indicates the strenuousness of the task.
