The laundress

Laundresses were women were washed clothes by hand, either in natural waterways or in public laundry rooms. Generally, the laundress would kneel on a flat surface to launder the clothes after they had soaked in water. Garments were rubbed with ashes before being rinsed and wrung out (either by hand or with a wooden beater), then brought to the dryer or spread out to dry in the meadow.
