In 79 C.E., Pompeii was completely buried during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, whose ashes blanketed all memory of the city for centuries. However, thanks to the excavation work that started in the 18th century, its remains have gradually been unearthed. Today, visitors come from around the world to explore the ancient Roman city, a UNESCO World Heritage Sitesince 1997. With its remarkably preserved theatres, Roman villas, private homes, public buildings, murals, shops, baths and temples, Pompeii provides a vivid window onto the past.
