Quebec

"In July 1948, inspired by my childhood reading, the paintings of Clarence Gagnon and my correspondence with a young schoolteacher, I came to Quebec on a study trip but fell in love with La Belle Province and, especially, Ghylaine. These colour studies and sketches were done along the Rivière Rouge and in the Laurentians soon after I arrived. Later on, I explored the region of Baie St-Paul, Chicoutimi and the Saguenay in both winter and summer, and also bicycled around the Gaspé Peninsula and all over and around Montreal. These excursions allowed me to draw farming, logging, fishing and other coastal activities before they were transformed by new technology, which always exacts a cost in terms of the picturesque and the aesthetically pleasing."
