Frédéric Back
Los Angeles Exhibition
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents
Frédéric Back: A Life’s Drawings
In the Linwood Dunn Theater Foyer, Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study
August 10 – November 1, 2008

This special exhibition showcases drawings that Frédéric Back made for his animated films as well as some of the thousands of concept sketches, notebook pages, illustrations and landscapes that he produced throughout his career. “Centering around a selection of animation cels and storyboard segments from three of his most noted films, the exhibition reveals the multiple sources that nourished the artist’s imagination, brilliantly mediated through the flow of his story constructions,” says guest curator Richard Gagnier. An electronic presentation of Back’s works will also be featured.

The exhibition is presented with the support of Autodesk, the Government of Quebec, the Government of Canada, Société Radio-Canada, Pixar Animation Studios and SIGGRAPH.

Atelier Frédéric Back warmly thanks

"Frédéric Back: A life’s Drawings"

One seems to think that Frédéric Back has always drawn; everything that he was discovering
and provided him with his life’s grounds for existence.
Although each moment was fully invested, it was beyond him, notebooks and sketch books of all sizes
became his messengers of experience. They constitute piles with much amount of water, land, trees and animals,
his wise men. And amongst these, he notices men’s base acts to take advantage of his fellow and earth resources.
Taking as an anchoring point a selection of animation cells and storyboard segments
from three of his most noted films, this exhibition is aiming to reveal the multiple sources
that are building his imaginary, which he brilliantly mediates through the flow of his story constructions.
